The black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) is a small gull that breeds in much of the Palearctic including Europe and also in coastal eastern Canada. Most of the population is migratory and winters further south, but some birds reside in the milder westernmost areas of Europe. Small numbers also occur in northeastern North America, where it was formerly known as the common black-headed gull. A ring-billed gull who came in to CWR because he was spotted in someone’s backyard and could hop but wasn’t flying. He didn’t take flight upon approach and was caught with a fishing net. Intake evaluation by rehabbers revealed that his left wing was very swollen, perhaps from a car collision. He’s doing well with us and is in fact pretty spoiled with the special treatment he gets.
