Scarcity trauma, rooted in experiences of lack and deprivation, can manifest in various ways: one common expression is hoarding. 🛍️ Hoarding often stems from a deep-seated fear of not having enough in the future. Those who have experienced scarcity trauma may accumulate possessions, even if they are unnecessary, as a way to create a sense of security. 😰 This behavior can be challenging to overcome because it represents an attempt to regain control over circumstances that once felt overwhelming

Experts don’t acknowledge High Functioning Depression because it does not cause a lack of functioning. But it can cause anhedonia, which is a lack of joy or interest. Here are some signs… 1. Outwardly, self-scrutinizing, and inwardly, feeling unable to enjoy wins, even when succeeding. 2. Feeling restless when you are not working and you cant relax. 3. Making future statements like, I will only be happy when a certain goal happens, but even when you reach your goals you still are not happy. If t

When a child decides to seek therapy for healing from childhood trauma, the support of their family, especially their parents, can be crucial. However, in cases where a parent, like a narcissistic mom, disapproves or undermines their child’s choice to seek therapy, it can compound the emotional burden❤️🩹 The child may already be grappling with the effects of the trauma and the courage it takes to seek help. The lack of support or even active resistance from a parent can intensify feelings of g

Scarcity trauma, stemming from early experiences of lacking basic needs, can profoundly impact how people show up in their lives. It’s a risk factor for high functioning depress!on Some individuals become hyper-focused on saving, accumulating possessions, or even hoarding as a way to cope with the fear of scarcity. Others may display patterns of overworking or overachieving, driven by an intense desire to avoid returning to a state of lack. Scarcity trauma can also lead to difficulties in settin

LONG POST ALERT …. This prophetic word through song was released on the High Holy Day of Yom Kippur, the day of Awe. 1 Kings 18:41-46, depicts the miracle of abundant rain following a long season of drought. The Lord ministered to us that the rain is coming, so we must prepare now so as not to miss what He is releasing, and have the capacity to embrace all He has for us! The days ahead may be difficult, but if we prepare for the rain, (revival) we will always be in a perpetual state of overflow.

Some people with Borderline Personality Disorder have a favorite person that they love one day and then when sudden waves of emotional dysregulation abruptly occur due to perceived rejection, this may lead them to impulsively turn on the same person. 💔 This may ultimately lead them to abandon a person that they love out of an intense fear that they will be abandoned. The idea is that they feel more empowered leaving the person because they are terrified of being left behind 😢 Initially this le

Immigrating to a new country brings opportunities and challenges. Starting over often means leaving behind familiarity, security, and social connections, which may lead to scarcity trauma. The pursuit of a better life can lead to financial, emotional, and cultural struggles which may affect our mental well-being. Hoarding is more than just collecting stuff; it can be a coping mechanism rooted in scarcity trauma. Experiencing a lack of things in the past can lead to a fear of not having enough in

It’s World Autism Awareness Week 🌎.Autistic parents often do not get a diagnosis until their children get one. Many times they learn about different presentations of autistic behavior by educating themselves after their children receive a diagnosis. They may grieve the fact that they went through life without the supports that their children have due to a lack of education and understanding from others during their own childhood. Adults who are autistic may find that advocating for their childr

Replying to @coolchristgirl when you grow up in a home where the people who love you and are supposed to protect you force you to choose sides, you might grow up with a lack of trust in people. This type of trauma may lead you to develop impulsive defense mechanisms like splitting or all or nothing thinking that cause you to make extreme decisions about your relationships. Many people with high functioning depress!on have a hard time naming or describing how they feel. 🫥This could be a symptom of alexithymia. 😑Many also have anhedonia which is a lack of feeling or pleasure in things that once brought them joy.🫤I talk about these symptoms and why people may experience them in my research and in my book on High functioning depresson and ways to heal. 🔬📕❤️🩹 #highfunctioningbook #highfunctioningaf #anhedonia #alexithymia #HFD | Dr. Judith Joseph MD

Many people think that depression looks like staying in bed all day, crying and being unproductive. However in my research, High functioning depression does not look like what people think depression should look like. These people lack joy and may be very productive. They may also have a hard time relaxing and enjoying their wins. Understanding the different types of depression is validating and allows people to identify key symptoms that impair their quality of life. Disclaimer: You may want to

When we are too busy to process negative emotions we may be using a coping mechanism to avoid sadness. This may also contribute to Anhedonia which is a lack of feeling joy or pleasure. It is important to slow down, process emotions and to feel. Slowing down and feeling may lead to sadness and tears, but it is only when we allow ourselves to feel the bad AND the good that we can allow ourselves to feel joy again. Listen to my episode with @Mel Robbins and take my anhedonia quiz at the link in bio

Schizophrenia may look different in men versus women. Men tend to have their first break of psychosis earlier and they tend to have more negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Negative symptoms don’t mean that symptoms are good or bad. Negative symptoms are things like flattened expressions, social withdrawal and lack of motivation. 🤔 Positive symptoms of schizophrenia aren’t good” this term applies to hallucinations or delusions. 🗯️ Cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia are largely overlooked but

Some people use urban slang to hide their privileged backgrounds. They feel guilty that they didn’t struggle so they try to fit in by sounding like people who did struggle. 🤔 Scarcity trauma occurs when you or your family have had struggles with a lack of resources and this may cause many people, especially students, to delay happiness and pleasure and work hard so that they never struggle again. Many people with scarcity trauma also have high functioning depres$ion. 📚💸 I coined the term “sca

Cutting off a narcissistic parent can be a difficult decision, but sometimes, it's a necessary step for one's mental and emotional well-being. It involves setting firm boundaries and prioritizing self-care over a toxic relationship. This decision often arises from a history of manipulative behavior, emotional abuse, and a persistent lack of empathy on the narcissistic parent's part. | Dr. Judith Joseph MD
