Swarming typically occurs in the spring, when the bees swarm, the old queen leaves the hive with a portion of the bees to establish a new colony. Ok, let’s review: There’s one queen, a few hundred drones (male bees), and thousands of workers (female bees) in a summer hive. But did you know summer worker bees and winter worker bees have different lifespans? Summer bees live fast and die young, about 3-4 weeks after they emerge from their cells. Winter bees look the same on the outside but contain special winter physiology that allows them to live up to 6 months if necessary. They are termed ‘diutinus bees’ from the Latin for ‘long lived.’
