In Illinois, Canada geese are banded by wildlife biologists for research purposes during mid to late June when the birds are molting and lack flight feathers. Biologists herd the geese into makeshift corrals from which they catch individual birds, determine their age and sex (or gender), then place leg bands with identification numbers on them.
