Tomatoes: Know Your Varieties! 🌱🍅 Before diving into tomato planting, let’s break down the basics! There are two main types of these beloved veggies. Check it out👇 🍅 Determinate Tomatoes: These varieties hit maturity, deliver one big harvest, then call it quits. Their fruits tend to ripen within a month or two, clustered at the end of branches. Many need cages, but some compact types like Patio and Better Bush are perfect for containers. Common picks include Celebrity, Roma, and more! 🍅 Ind

Planting Bush Tomatoes Bush tomatoes are known as determinate or bush varieties. They don’t need training or support as they grow in a compact or determinate bush shape and do not need to have their side shoots removed. A bush variety, especially dwarf bush varieties, are good for windowsill growing, hanging baskets, containers or anywhere where space is an issue. You will also find them useful if you are using a mini tunnel or cloche system and don't have the height for a tall cordon type. Don'

It is true! 🍅 There are 2 types of tomatoes - Indeterminate & Determinate. Determinate tomato plants reach their mature height, and then they will set all of their fruit at once and stop growing. These types of tomato plants do not usually require pruning because when the fruit ripens it happens all at once over a 1-3 week time period and then the plant is done. Indeterminate tomatoes produce and ripen fruit all throughout the season and do require pruning to stay healthy. These are tomato plan

Roma tomatoes - These are determinate tomatoes which means they don’t need pruning and all I’ve had to do is tie them periodically to the trellis that I installed behind the bushes. They will crop and ripen all at once which is great if you want them for making tomato sauce. However, mine have given me an additional crop into autumn and these are still ripening. 🍅 Determinate vs. Indeterminate Tomatoes: What’s the Difference? 🍅 When it comes to growing tomatoes, one of the first things to consider is whether you want to plant determinate or indeterminate varieties. The main difference between these two types is how they grow and how they should be trellised. Determinate tomatoes, also known as “bush” tomatoes, have a compact growth habit and tend to reach a certain height (usually 3-4 feet) before stopping. They produce a large crop of fruit over a re

Determinate vs. Indeterminate Tomatoes! . You should grow some of each at some point in your gardening career because they both have pros and cons! . Determinates do reach maturity faster as in, they will get to the set height and set flowers fruit typically before an Indeterminate tomato variety will. This can be VERY helpful if you have a short growing season OR if you live somewhere like TEXAS where we reach 100°F days and relentless pest pressure as early as May! If you're last average frost

Indeterminate tomatoes, also known as “vine” tomatoes, are varieties that keep growing and producing fruit throughout the season. They can grow quite tall and need support to prevent their stems from bending or breaking. That’s where trellising comes in! Trellising is a technique used to guide plants upward and keep them in place. For indeterminate tomatoes, most home gardeners set up stakes or cages and tying the plants to them as they grow. Two other methods I have used, that have dramatically

Pruning for healthy Tomato plants! 🌱🍅 Firstly, not all types of tomatoes need to be pruned. If you are growing ‘determinate’ or bush tomato plants there is no need to prune them. They grow to a fixed mature size and generally ripen all of their fruit within a few weeks. ‘Indeterminate’ tomatoes - like the one I’m pruning above - do not have a fixed mature size, but continue to grow throughout the season, and grow into very large vines. Many of the most popular tomato varieties are generally in

When pruning tomato plants, it is important to know if your plants are determinate or indeterminate. All of mine are indeterminate, meaning that they will continue to grow all season. This is why I prune the suckers. Most people do not prune the suckers for determinate varieties of tomatoes because the plants only get so big and stop growing. I hope that this is helpful! Happy Growing!😁🍅 🌱 #OptimisticKitchen #gardener #happyeating #makeyourkitchenyourhappyplace #ReduceFoodWaste #GrowFood #gr

There are many ways to trellis your determinate tomatoes, and we’re here to share some of our favorite methods. Determinate (bush) will go to a determinate size and produce a few large flushes of fruit before being done for the season. To contain these bushy plants I recommend the following methods. The stake method involves using wooden or metal stakes to support your plants and tying them with twine as they grow. The cage method uses wire cages that you place over your plants, providing suppor
