#OnThisDay, July 15, 1937, the Buchenwald Concentration Camp was established. ⁠ ⁠ Buchenwald was one of the largest camps within German borders. The camp was built to hold only 8,000 prisoners. However, camp records indicate that throughout its existence, some 240,000 prisoners were confined at Buchenwald. ⁠ ⁠ The area surrounding the camp was comprised of numerous watchtowers, 3 layers of electrified barbed-wire fencing, and a chain of sentries outfitted with automatic machine guns.⁠ ⁠ Escape w
