A close encounter with a Velvet Ant, or “Cow Killer” Contrary to its name, this is a wingless wasp. Velvet Ants are solitary and search out other nests to lay her eggs in, such as ground-nesting bees. She will deposit one egg near each larva in the host nest, which will then be consumed by the developing Velvet Ant after it hatches.
