Step 2 of our chess board build is much like step 1, with some twists. We use black dye on the walnut strips and bleach on the maple strips to create more dramatic contrast than the natural wood tones can provide, while keeping the grain visible. Splines and grooves are used to keep each strip aligned and the whole thing flat during sanding and glue-up. We can’t do any sanding to smooth things out later due to the pre-finishing process. Once the glue dries, I’ll make another set of cuts to form

Checkerboard patterns are nothing short of true class and artistry. We will *always* have heart eyes for this look 😍 | The Tile Shop
