The Caldwell family started building this house in 1903 in the Cataloochee Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains. But like many mountain homes, sections of it were added or completed as money was available so this home wasn't finished until 1906. Due to its remote location, many of the building materials, like window glass, had to be brought in from Waynesville or Asheville on horse drawn wagons that had to navigate treacherous mountain roads.
