Duntrune Castle originally built by Clan MacDougall in the 12th century before being taken over by Clan Campbell. Duncan Campbell, whose father had supported King Robert the Bruce received a royal charter granting him the castle. In 1644, the castle was besieged by a force led by Alasdair Colkitto MacDonald after the Battle of Inverlochy, when the lands of the Campbells were ravaged by the Marquis of Montrose’s army.
