We’re clamoring for Clematis! Here are our tips for growing this perennial flowering vine: 1. Planting: Choose a location with at least 6 hours of sunlight, but keep the root area shaded, as clematis prefer their “feet” in the cool and “heads” in the sun. Planting a small shrub or groundcover at the base can help achieve this. 2. Watering: Clematis vines need consistent moisture. Water them regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. There are 3 groups of clematis and if you’re not sure what you have, I would wait it out: 1 and 2 bloom on the old growth so leave them alone except to tidy them up. Group 2 needs another pruning after they bloom the first round and they will rebloom (these are hybrids). When removing the dead stuff, you can gently pull it off or cut it back.
