The ancient Egyptian book of the dead is real, but it is not a book as we might think of one today. It’s a series of ritual spells that helped the deceased find their way to the afterlife. There are nearly 200 known spells today, and assemblages of spells were inscribed on objects from papyrus scrolls to mummy wrappings, all meant to accompany the dead in the tomb. 📍 Get up close with these manuscripts that are now on display for the first time at the Getty Villa Museum through January 29, 2024
