The beach plum, or Prunus maritima, is a deciduous shrub that is indigenous to the eastern United States. In early spring, spectacular blooms of white tiny flowers emerge attracting small pollinators. The white flowers will develop a pinkish hue upon successful pollination and will produce blueish to purple fruit in the late summer or early fall. The fruit produced is small, round and about the size of a cherry. It is tart and commonly used for jams, jellies and preserves. 🤩 #beachplum #prunusm

The Aquarium of the Pacific is partnering with the Marine Mammal Care Center (@marinemammalcare) to support rapid response to a large-scale incident of sea lion strandings on local beaches. Right now, we are seeing a large number of sea lions stranding on popular SoCal beaches due to something known as domoic acid toxicosis. This neurotoxin from planktonic algae builds up in their systems through the food they eat and causes neurological and cardiovascular issues. We need the help of volunteers
