The 59cc Tri-Zinger was the first Yamaha Youth ATV. It featured shaft drive, fully automatic transmission, adjustable speed limiters and a tethered emergency stop switch. Parents could easily adjust engine speed and control the unit as the rider gained experience.

It had a snorkel-type air intake to prevent water or dirt from entering, the “Autolube” separate oil supply system, a 2-stroke, 125cc engine and wide balloon tires front and rear, giving it solid off-road performance. It was first sold in North America in 1979 and introduced into Japan in 1982, where a 175cc version was sold alongside it.
