Toad (Mortimer Toynbee) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist/co-writer Jack Kirby, he first appeared in The X-Men #4 (March 1964). Toad is most often depicted as an enemy of the X-Men and was originally a hunchbacked mutant with superhuman leaping ability.

After the X-Men defeated the Hellfire Club, the Toad returned to the Jean Grey School, but was fired by the staff for his betrayal. Visibly depressed about the situation, the Toad accepted his fate and was met by a guilty Husk, who invited him for a date so she could get to know him again.

In the X-Men series, Toad, or Mortimer Toynbee, is a key player in Magneto's plans. He is initially part of a military unit in Vietnam, but later joins Magneto's team after Mystique liberates him. Toad contributes to Magneto's plan by working on his mutation device.

As a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the Toad met the Scarlet Witch and became infatuated with her, though she did not reciprocate the feeling. The team's nefarious schemes would often be confronted and defeated by the mutant heroes known collectively as the X-Men.
