Hordeum spontaneum, commonly known as wild barley or spontaneous barley, is the wild form of the grass in the family Poaceae that gave rise to the cereal barley (Hordeum vulgare).

In wild barley (and other Old World species of Hordeum), only the central spikelet is fertile, while the other two are reduced. This condition is retained in certain cultivars known as two-row barleys.

The wild barley populations included: 53 wild barley accessions from the Southwest Asia (Israel, Jordan, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Azerbaijan, Syria, Turkey, and Iraq); 21 wild barley from Central Asia (Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Pakistan), and 20 wild barley from Tibet of China.

Wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum), containing the same genome as cultivated barley, is the progenitor of cultivated barley. In this chapter, we reviewed origin and domestication of barley, distribution and growth habits, and environmental adaptation of wild barley, as well as utilization of wild barley in breeding.
