The first squadron designated Patrol Squadron FOUR (VP-4) was established in 1928 and was based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Re-designated Patrol Squadron TWENTY-TWO (VP-22) in 1938, the squadron was nearly destroyed during the Japanese attack on 7 December, 1941.

Master Chief Ogren returned to VP-4 in January 2024. Master Chief Ogren is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy Class 201 and the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat Course Class 181.

In April of 2024, CDR Frankhouser reported to the VP-4 “Skinny Dragons” as Executive Officer. CDR Frankhouser has accumulated over 2,000 flight hours in the P-3C, EP-3E, and P-8A. Her awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards) and various service awards and ribbons.
