Originally built as the SS Marine Owl by Sun Shipbuilding Corporation, Chester, Pennsylvania, she was launched on 15 August 1944, converted to a hospital ship at Todd Shipyard, Hoboken, New Jersey and commissioned on 20 June 1945.
