2013年1月7日 · The month, January, is the first month of the year. The month of January is the first month of the year. In the first case you do need the commas to indicate a parenthetical explanation. Without them you have two nouns together, and nouns don't qualify nouns. An adjective would work, but neither month nor January have a corresponding adjective.

It would have to be amended with data from the 21st through the end of the month to be a report that could be described as being “Month ending, February.” At the end of the year you would have 12 reports: month ending, January; month ending, February; month ending, March; etc. … and that would identify them as all belonging to a set.

I think anyone who said it was the first week just because it reached one day into the month would be barking mad, but I can certainly understand reluctance to entertain part-weeks, especially if it's only four days. Six days in should be a no-brainer though, so I can't quite accept your last definition either.

If we're on the 30th of the month. This month and last month may mean the same thing. Also, month may have the "period" meaning, which would make last month everything between the 30th of the previous calendar month and the 30th of the current calendar month. I'm honestly here because I don't know what last month/this month means in Outlook. –

"I will be back early January" is an ellipsis (an omission of a word or phrase) of "I will be back in early January." "I will be back in the early January" is incorrect; perhaps someone was trying to say "I will be back in the beginning of January," which would be correct.

So, I interpreted the line "You are covered for days until Monday January 13" initially, I thought that I was covered up to the 12th and had to come to work on the 13th.
