Shure SM7 vs. Sennheiser MD421 for Vocals?
Mar 13, 2009 · I love the SM7 on a lot of em too. Heck, a 57 or 58 will also work. Start collecting, one thing you can't have too many of is microphones. And the solid choices (421, 441, RE-20, SM7) have pretty good resale value if you choose to sell. I can't stand the hype around the SM7. It's mostly the placebo effect, people pimp it because it's a safe bet.

Jan 24, 2008 · If you have an extra SM58 (or maybe SM57), pull the transformer out of it, and wire the leads directly to the XLR pins - it won't sound like a SM7, but it'll be lower output and have a flatter response.

Jul 8, 2009 · FWIW a nice alternative to a SM7 is the Beyer (or Beyerdynamic) M400 Soundstar MKII. IMHO it usually works better with a prosumer mic pre vs. the SM7. I suppose another good choice would be the transformer-less mod on a SM57 or '58. Anyway... IIRC the SM7 has been used on various Sheryl Crow, and Rod Stewart recordings-among many others.

Granted, a lot of them sell to buyers in Europe, since these puppies are considerably more expensive there. However, this really weirded...

Sep 27, 2006 · I've never used an SM7 or a VTB-1, so I'll say that right up front. But it seems odd to me that your SM7 is displaying that much less sensitivity than a 57. From the specs: SM57 Sensitivity (at 1,000 Hz) Open Circuit Voltage: -56.0 dBV/Pa* (1.6 mV) *(1 Pa = 94 dB SPL) SM7B Output Level (at 1,000 Hz) Open Circuit Voltage*: -59.0 dB (1.12 mV)
