The seal of the state of Alaska was first adopted before statehood, when the area was known as the District of Alaska. The first governor designated a seal of the district which featured glaciers, northern lights, igloos and an Inuk person ice fishing.

This Seal was retained through Alaska’s territorial days and by adoption of Alaska’s constitution in 1956 became the State Seal when Alaska joined the Union on January 3, 1959. The rays above the mountains represent the famous Alaskan northern lights, also known as aurora borealis.

The seal fishery was one of the chief considerations that induced the United States to purchase Alaska. It provided considerable revenue by the lease of the privilege of taking seals, an amount that was eventually more than the price paid for Alaska.

Jan 15, 2025 · The State of Alaska officially sanctions, by statute, the minting of an official Alaska state medallion annually. One side of the medallion depicts a scene involving wildlife. The other side contains the Great Seal of the State of Alaska.

The harbor seal, is a widespread species in both the north Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and is found in Alaska along the coast extending from Dixon Entrance north to Kuskokwim Bay and west throughout the Aleutian Islands.

Each year there is a design contest for Alaska residents to design the obverse of the medallion, the Seal of the State of Alaska is always used on the reverse. A company in Anchorage called Alaska Precious Metals won the first contract from 1989 thru 1991, having the coins struck at a private mint in Oregon.
