2005年12月29日 · As I understand the term "Open Matte," in the theater the movie is shown in a 1.85/1 ratio by cropping the top and bottom (or some portion) of the 1.33/1 full frame or 35mm image. The same movie when shown on an SD TV channel in 1.33/1 ratio, the cropped portions of the image are restored (sometimes with unintended things showing up in frame).

2010年7月16日 · Some (and maybe most?) 2.35:1 movies have an open-matte version to make them 16:9 (like Gladiator). Most 1.85:1 movies can be expanded all the way to 4:3. If given the option to see more picture than the theatrical aspect ratio version, which of these do you prefer for your home viewing, and what is the aspect ratio of your display?

2021年9月10日 · The only ones I can recall seeing on Blu-ray that were open matte from their original 2.35 aspect ratios were VENOM (the non-Marvel horror film from 2005), the OOP Echo Bridge edition of HALLOWEEN H20, and EQUILIBRIUM. The DVD edition of 2003's THE RECRUIT was open matte but the Blu-ray features the original aspect ratio.

I think this is similar to the 24fps and 48fps debate. Much like 24fps, 2.40:1 feels more "cinematic". It has a certain look the viewer generally expects from a movie. The IMAX version is 1.90:1, the one I have is the open matte version which is 1.78:1. However, this version is better since it fills up the TV perfectly for maximum immersion. This 1.78:1 is actually expanded from the 1.90:1 version, it’s not a crop of the 1.90:1 version (check the last picture for proof).

These screenshots compare the 4K UHD blu-ray to the 2012 blu-ray to the 2D stripped (left eye only) open matte version ripped from the 3D blu-ray. I was hoping it wasn’t the case but as you can see, the 2D only image from the 3D version has a slight background perspective change, as well as some cleaned up edges.
