Neurotrophin-3 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NTF3 gene. [5][6] The protein encoded by this gene, NT-3, is a neurotrophic factor in the NGF (Nerve Growth Factor) family of neurotrophins.

Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) is a neurotrophic factor and a member of the nerve growth factor (NGF) family of proteins that includes neuron growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and neurotrophin-4/5. NT-3 signals a number of trophic effects through its transducing receptor tyrosine kinase TrkC.

NT-3 is a potential pharmacological target for mood disorders because of its effects on monoamine neurotransmitters, regulation of synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling boosting, and modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

NTF3 is a novel target gene of POU3F2 and that the POU3F2/NTF3 pathway plays a role in the process of neuronal differentiation. High expression of NT-3 is associated with glioblastoma. Meta-analysis found the levels of both NT-3 and NT-4/5 were significantly increased in bipolar disorder patients.

Nerve growth factor was the first identified protein with anti-apoptotic activity on neurons. This prototypic neurotrophic factor, together with the three structurally and functionally related growth factors, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT3), and neurotrophin-4/5 (NT4/5), forms the neurotrophin protein family.
