Monazite: A rare-earth phosphate mineral. - Geology.com
Monazite is a rare phosphate mineral with a chemical composition of (Ce,La,Nd,Th) (PO 4,SiO 4). It usually occurs in small isolated grains, as an accessory mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks such as granite, pegmatite, schist, and gneiss.
Monazite Group: Mineral information, data and localities.
The great majority of "monazite" is monazite-(Ce), the La-, Nd-, Sm- and Gd-dominant members are all very rare. Monazite usually contains small amounts of Th or sometimes U, both making it radioactive, and making it very useful for geochronology.

Monazite, phosphate mineral, cerium and lanthanum phosphate, (Ce, La)PO4, that is the major commercial source of cerium. Occurring as small, brown, resinous, rather heavy crystals in granitic and gneissic rocks and their detritus (called monazite sands), monazite frequently contains 10–12 percent.
Monazite-(Nd): Mineral information, data and localities.
The root name is from the Greek μουάζειυ "to be solitary" in allusion to the rarity of its (monazite-(Ce)) presence in the first known localities. Type Locality: ⓘ Monte Giove, Vallone del Vannino, Formazza, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province, Piedmont, Italy
Monazite - Northwestern University
Monazite is a red/green-brownish, waxy mineral. It is hard and resistant. Monazite is formed when igneous rocks undergo crystallization and when clastic sedimentary rocks undergo metamorphism. It is commonly mined in placer deposits, which are masses of loose sediment mainly consisting of sand.

Monazite is a rare-earth element-rich phosphate mineral that is predominantly reddish-brown in colour. Monzite Formula: The Monazite formula is (Ce,La,Nd,Th) (PO4,SiO4), and in igneous and metamorphic rocks such as granite, pegmatite, schist, and gneiss, it is contained in small isolated grains as an accessory mineral.
Monazite - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Monazite is a phosphate mineral containing approximately 70% REE oxides. According to dominant REE contents, monazite is divided into monazite- (Ce), monazite- (La), monazite- (Nd), and monazite- (Sm), and the first type is most common in nature.
The monazite Mineral Group - The Mineral and Gemstone Kingdom
Monazite- (Ce), the cerium-rich end member, is by far the most common group mineral of this series, and accounts for most of the known specimens and occurrences. Monazite is radioactive, and specimens may be metamict with rounded crystal faces.

Oct 26, 2022 · Monazite is a reddish-brown phosphate mineral and one of the beach sand minerals that contain rare earth elements like lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, etc. It is resistant to weathering and becomes concentrated in soils. It is an important ore of thorium and hence is radioactive.
