Monazite is a primarily reddish-brown phosphate mineral that contains rare-earth elements. Due to variability in composition, monazite is considered a group of minerals. [ 3 ] The most common species of the group is monazite-(Ce) , that is, the cerium-dominant member of the group. [ 4 ]

Monazite is a rare phosphate mineral with a chemical composition of (Ce,La,Nd,Th) (PO 4,SiO 4). It usually occurs in small isolated grains, as an accessory mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks such as granite, pegmatite, schist, and gneiss.

The great majority of "monazite" is monazite-(Ce), the La-, Nd-, Sm- and Gd-dominant members are all very rare. Monazite usually contains small amounts of Th or sometimes U, both making it radioactive, and making it very useful for geochronology.

Monazite, phosphate mineral, cerium and lanthanum phosphate, (Ce, La)PO4, that is the major commercial source of cerium. Occurring as small, brown, resinous, rather heavy crystals in granitic and gneissic rocks and their detritus (called monazite sands), monazite frequently contains 10–12 percent.

Monazite is a phosphate mineral containing approximately 70% REE oxides. According to dominant REE contents, monazite is divided into monazite- (Ce), monazite- (La), monazite- (Nd), and monazite- (Sm), and the first type is most common in nature.

Monazite- (Ce), the cerium-rich end member, is by far the most common group mineral of this series, and accounts for most of the known specimens and occurrences. Monazite is radioactive, and specimens may be metamict with rounded crystal faces.
