The Studies and Observations Group (also known as SOG, MACSOG, and MACV-SOG) was a top secret, joint unconventional warfare task force created on 24 January 1964 by the Joint Chiefs of Staff as a subsidiary command of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV).

They conducted a number of covert operations, which had a profound effect on the outcome of the conflict.

The combat elements associated with MACV-SOG were used to reinforce and assist in the recon mission. The first MACV-SOG recon teams were initially called “SPIKE TEAMS”, later “RECON TEAMS” each team generally consisting of 3 US SF personnel and up to 9 indigenous personnel.
