The original Village of Calumet was incorporated on April 18, 1889, but was reincorporated and renamed Laurium on March 27, 1895. The Laurium Village Hall received extensive remodeling in 1914. The original brick front was redone in sandstone. Architect Fred Maas prepared the architectural drawings and plans.

The George Gipp Arena (formerly known as the Bicentennial Arena) is open annually from November through March and hosts public skating, hockey, figure skating and private rentals. The arena is located at 200 Isle Royale Street. Laurium has housed many ice rinks in it’s past, most notably the Palestra built in 1900 era.
