Jean “Yanko” Varda (1893-1971) was best known for his collages, which he made from bits of paper, textiles and paint, mounted on plywood. Born to Greek parents in Smyrna (now Izmir,in Turkey), Varda, moved first to Paris as a young man, then to London, before traveling to New York for an exhibit of his work in 1939.

As lively and colorful as his artwork, Varda’s charismatic personality attracted the leading artists and intellectuals of the day—from Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque to Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin.

The Beat Museum is pleased to present a special exhibition of major artworks and drawings by artist Jean “Yanco” Varda (1893–1971), provided courtesy of the John Natsoulas Gallery. An enduring cultural icon, Varda’s art remains a testament to a man with an unparalleled joie de vive.

Of mixed Greek and French descent, Jean Varda (1893–1971) was born in Izmir, Turkey. Known as a child prodigy artist, at 19 he moved to Paris, and then on to London during World War I, where he became a ballet dancer and was active in London avant-garde circles.

2024年11月17日 · Jean (Yanko) Varda was a Greek-born multi-media artist who spent much of his life in California where he was characterized “as the last Bohemian.” From the late 1940s through his death in 1971, Varda was best known for using textiles, papers, photographs, and paint to create wonderfully imaginative assemblages and collages.
