Instantaneous Field of View (IFOV) or Spatial Resolution is the smallest detail within the FOV that can be detected or seen at a set distance, and Instantaneous Field of View Measurement (IFOV Measurement) establishes the smallest measurable area from which an accurate temperature measurement from set distance can be obtained [29].

In terms of satellite remote sensing the instantaneous FOV (IFOV) angular resolution has a lower limit set by the diffraction limit which is λ/D, where λ is the wavelength and D is the diameter of the first target (lens or in the case of most satellite instruments the primary sensor mirror).
