A gumma (plural gummata or gummas) is a soft, non-cancerous growth resulting from the tertiary stage of syphilis (and yaws [1]). It is a form of granuloma. [2]

Syphilitic gummata usually occur in tertiary syphilis, a stage in which blood vessels, the heart, and the nervous system are affected. However, syphilitic gummata are rare and therefore not integrated into the aforementioned neurosyphilis classification scheme.

Syphilis is a complex systemic disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Gumma, also known as gummy tumor, is more common in the late stages of syphilis and is highly destructive. In the early stage, it is a deep, subcutaneous nodule that gradually grows and adheres to the skin.
