The ACK-353 was equipped with the new for 1939 GMC 248 engine, an overhead valve, low-deck inline-six with a 3 + 23 ⁄ 32 in (94 mm) bore and 3 + 13 ⁄ 16 in (97 mm) stroke, resulting in a 248 cu in (4.1 L) displacement, producing 77 brake horsepower (57 kW) (net).

Probably the most commonplace truck of allied armies in WW2: The GMC 353 (and its shorte wheelbase variant the 352) has been nicknamed on the field "Jimmy", "Deuce and a Half" among others.

The GMC 353 was the most common US tactical truck of WW2, with more than 570,000 made until 1945 at Detroit. Wether it was called "Jimmy", "Deuce and a Half" this bedrock of the red ball express in late 1944 allowed the allies to push forwards towards Germany and stayed supplied.

The CCW-353 (C for 1941 design, C for conventional cab, and W for tandem rear axles) was a near identical version of the CCKW-353, that lacked its front-wheel drive, resulting in an officially purely on-road, and therefore 5-ton rated, 6×4 version of the same truck. A beam front axle was used, with the transfer case locked in high range.

The US Army 2-1/2-ton series, 6x6 trucks were the most widely used tactical transport vehicle of World War II. Over 800,000 were produced, 562,750 by GMC alone. The first GMC 2-1/2-ton, 6x6 was basically a six-wheel drive commercial type, designated the ACKWX-353, which entered production in 1939.
