2010年5月7日 · The adze is the most important carving tool used by indigenous carvers on the Northwest Coast. Many different styles of adzes were developed in ancient times, using ground stone blades made of a hard greenstone called jadite or nephrite. Chisels were made of beaver teeth and elk horn.

With precise repeated strokes in a continuous line, the D adze gave the work a characteristically ripple effect. Most cultural groups considered a pole not finished unless it bore this effect. A straight adze was used as well in this Native American culture.

D-Handled Adze They have a handle in which the hand can be wrapped around the D, closer to the bit. These adzes closely follow traditional forms in which the bit or tooth is not shaped in a way that that it can be wrapped around a handle, to be seen as a head of the tool.
