Though some of the races are bonus races you should not enable until you beat all the regular challenge races as I think they replace them outright.

Playing the main game would get you critters and chaos drives and rings to improve your Chao, and when you got bored of Chao you went back to the main game, it's endlessly addicting and a fantastic gameplay loop.

Doing so in the Chao Garden takes literal months of gameplay--a Chao's life is about 30 hours long, and it will take many, many lives to get what you want.
