The bobcat (Lynx rufus), also known as the wildcat, bay lynx, [2] [3] or red lynx, [4] is one of the four extant species within the medium-sized wild cat genus Lynx. Native to North America, it ranges from southern Canada through most of the contiguous United States to Oaxaca in Mexico.

Depending on the species and where they live, Bobcats can range in size. Normally, adult bobcats measure 18-30 inches (45-75 cm) with a tail of 6-11 inches (15-28 cm). Male bobcats are usually bigger than females and typically weigh 10 to 20 pounds (4.5 – 9 kg).

The bobcat has a wide range, from British Columbia, eastwards through southern Canada to Nova Scotia, and southwards through most of the US to central Mexico. The bobcat is reported as inhabiting every US state except Delaware.

Geographic range. Home range size of bobcats in western Washington varies from 2.5 to six square miles for adult males, about half that for adult females. Home range size in eastern Washington tends to be larger. Rock cliffs, outcroppings, and ledges are important to bobcats for shelter, raising young, and resting sites.
