Yes, you can look much worse in a photograph. So much has to go right when you take a photo that it can be quite difficult to capture a good one. This is lighting, angle and facial expression. Too much light can make your face look shapeless or flat while too little light can make your face look gaunt and cast shadows where there shouldn't be any.
