Alternative education encompasses educational philosophy differing from mainstream pedagogy and evidence-based education. Such alternative learning environments may be found within state, charter, and independent schools as well as home-based learning environments.

Alternative education has roots that stretch back centuries, evolving alongside societal changes and the recognition of diverse learning needs. In the early days, educational alternatives often arose as responses to rigid, one-size-fits-all systems.

The NAEA is a volunteer organization dedicated to information sharing and professional development, best practice, public policy, and advocacy for alternative learning and teaching.

By examining the successes and pitfalls of new and alternative learning environments, these education innovators and scholars are working to assuage fears that change will negatively impact learning and affirm curiosity about what might be possible.
