Khaya anthotheca, with the common name East African mahogany, is a large tree species in the Meliaceae family, native to tropical Africa. The name anthotheca was taken from the Greek word anthos , meaning flower, while theca refers to a capsule.

Khaya anthotheca occurs at medium to low altitudes in evergreen forests and riverine fringe forests in Africa. In Tanzania it is commonly found in the foothills of mountain ranges, in well-drained soils, and swamp and riverine areas.

Khaya is a genus of African timber trees with wood closely resembling mahogany. Info attached to the tree in Kirstenbosch NBG includes – “It is said that the first visiting botanist who saw the tree growing in a forest somewhere in Africa asked the guide what the tree was called.

Khaya anthotheca is a large evergreen tree up to 60 m tall (up to 30 m in the garden) with an elongated or rounded, much-branched crown; the trunk is buttressed in old specimens. The bark on the young branches is smooth and greyish-brown but smooth to sometimes mottled grey and brown, flaking on the older branches and stems.

Khaya anthotheca or commonly known as White Mahogany or East African Mahogany is a 60m high deciduous tree that is fast growing. It has a dense crown, large buttresses, and a bole of up to 120 cm in diameter. The plant is widely distributed throughout tropical Africa.
