Karaikal is the birthplace of Karaikal Ammaiyar (born Punitavati), meaning “The Revered Mother of Karaikal,” who is one of the three women among the 63 Nayanmars and one of the greatest figures of early Tamil literature. Ammaiyar was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.

“Karaikal Carnival 2025” is an initiative of the Karaikal Tourism Department and the District Administration, Karaikal with a view to promote tourism through Art, Culture and providing Craftsman, Artisans, Musicians, folk artist, a platform to showcase their trade and craft.
