His iconic 1941 photograph of Winston Churchill was a breakthrough point in his career, through which he took numerous photos of known political leaders, men and women of arts and sciences. More than 20 photos by Karsh appeared on the cover of Life magazine, until he retired in 1993.

His most famous portrait, taken in 1941, is of Winston Churchill. The image captures the British Prime Minister’s determination and defiance during World War II. Karsh famously removed Churchill’s cigar just before taking the shot, resulting in a stern and somewhat annoyed expression that perfectly captured the wartime leader’s spirit.

'Yousuf Karsh is known internationally for his ability to capture the true humanity of an individual in his portraits. Appropriately titled “The Most Famous People in the World,” Karsh 100 is an exhibition of many of the most well known personalities of the past century.
