The "Y" used in the yen symbol may have been adopted due to the propensity of foreigners to pronounce the word "en" (how "yen" is correctly pronounced in Japan) with a "y" preceding it. Adding the horizontal lines differentiates the symbol from the letter "Y".

It looks like the \perp symbol except there are two rather than one vertical line. I asked him after class what symbol it is but he just said it's something he learned when he was doing his PhD and never thought too much of it.

2022年1月6日 · It's not so much a stylized representation of the kanji. But more so for the sound, since those who are not Japanese tend to pronounce it as "y-en". Thus the use of the "Y" with two lines through it. It's the same reason Yuan uses the same symbol.

At first glance I would say to distinguish them between the letters S, L, and Y. Interesting to note that when I was young we pretty much always used two vertical lines on the dollar sign and supposedly came from "The Pillars of Hercules".

So I'm a little confused by "It’s definitely the symbol on my door," with no notice of any difference when they get back to the door. I don't have any ideas for these circles/lines/dots.
