2016年8月25日 · XKCD really is relevant to a hell of a lot of things. I do love the "Amount of radiation from a Nuke Plant" vs "Amount of Radiation from a Coal Plant" in the top left. Always interesting to show folk that one. From what I understand it's strictly an American thing where Coal is less regulated, so I wonder if it's the same in the UK/Europe.

2019年6月26日 · The corn husks contained enough residual radiation to fog up Kodak camera film packaged with them. As a general rule, dust is the worst offender when it comes to biological dosage like this XKCD chart. By keeping the explosions more or less sealed underground, the USA did wonders for the overall exposure.

While it is true that there is a difference between acute and chronic exposures in terms of health effects, in the occupational radiation safety world, a mSv is a mSv in terms of dose limits and how we analyze risk.

Most of the doses listed are taken from the excellent XKCD radiation chart and/or the wikipedia pages of the various imaging modalities. The TSA backscatter dose (which is always controversial on reddit) was taken from an independent analysis of the scanners, published recently .

2021年6月11日 · It's the XKCD radiation chart, it compares instant doses with doses over a year or so pretty haphazardly, although it does include a warning that short term bursts are more dangerous. It's a great go-to chart for some back on the enveloping, it's not meant to be too rigorous, it comes from a comics series.
