In 1974, at the 15th North American Big Game Awards Program held in Atlanta, Georgia, Burris’ world’s record was confirmed. With a final score of 225-6/8 points, Burris’ buck took the first-place award for the typical mule deer category, in addition to the coveted Sagamore Hill Award for the finest trophy taken during that entry period.

Numerous record-book mule deer have come out of the area, and this is the largest. William L. Murphy killed this Kaibab buck on November 14, 1943. For three decades it sat undiscovered until Murphy’s son-in-law William L. Karam entered it into the Boone and Crockett Records.

Bowhunting authority Pope and Young announced the certification Wednesday, determining that Bowdy Gardner’s 2012 buck “is now the largest bow-harvested Typical Velvet Mule Deer in North America."

It’s official: Nevada bowhunter Frank Cheeney now holds the world record for largest typical mule deer ever taken with a bow. Cheeney shot the monster buck on Aug. 13, 2016, while hunting with his son, Aaron, in southeastern Nevada.
