In 1913, at the age of 47, she married William Heelis (1871–1945), a respected local solicitor with an office in Hawkshead. Potter was also a prize-winning breeder of Herdwick sheep and a prosperous farmer keenly interested in land preservation.

William was a gentleman of meek and discreet manner. After a long and happy marriage and the hard shock of his wife's death he left their home at Castle Cottage, Near Sawrey, Cumbria and spent the brief remainder of his life in a nursing home at York where he died.
