2022年7月29日 · The white wax scale is a conspicuous species which is sedentary except in the first instar when the so-called crawlers actively move around before settling. The second and third instars later move from the leaves to the twigs and in the case of heavy infestations to the fruit.

Our Lilly Pilly hedge has an infestation of white wax scale. In desperation, I’ve been using a high water pressure hose to dislodge them from the tree. I’ve been applying Pest Oil to the plant, but hasn’t seemed to work. There are thousands of these suckers riddled throughout the hedge, and it’s obvious that it’s in some distress.

2022年7月29日 · Once the crawlers settle down, they start secreting white wax. Gimpel et al. (1974) described in detail the process and shapes of the wax produced by wax scales and C. destructor produces its wax in a similar way. After 3-4 days of settlement, the dorsal wax pad appears as a thin, white marking. The wax rays gradually appear around the body margin.

A total of 104 unigenes related to white wax biosynthesis were identified, and 15 of them were selected for quantitative real-time PCR analysis. We evaluated the variations in gene expression across different development stages, including egg, first/second instar larvae, male pupae, and male and female adults.

Mature adult female scales are large, up to 0.25 inch (6 mm) in diameter, bright white, and circular. They may reach only half that size on some hosts. Adult females are a brownish-purple color under their waxy covering. When young scales initially produce wax, it looks like an old-fashioned cameo pin (Fig. 1).

The most common is White Wax Scale which can be seen in large patches of white waxy material along stems and shoots. The wax covers the insects which feed on the sap. The adult scale lays up to 1000 eggs that hatch into crawlers.
