You’ll end up needing many throughout the game, so I recommend setting up a small gel sack farm at your home base.

You can pick it up and replant it when you get back to base rather than do fill your inventory. Cut a gel sack two times for seeds, then pick it up to use for crafting. Then you can replant the two seeds. Gel sacks break after three cuts. Each cut gives one seed, so it's more useful to cut twice and grab the gel sack to use that way.
