Waipi‘o (or Waipio) Valley is named after the meandering Wailoa Stream that runs through the valley (wai-piʻo means curved water in the Hawaiian language) and is about one mile wide and six miles deep. Towards the back the valley splits into many ‘fingers’, each one with its own waterfall.

Time and nature's elements have carved an unimaginably massive valley filled with deep green-encrusted cliffs cut by plunging waterfalls. Its floor is carpeted with forests and neatly formed taro patches interspersed with the homes of its few residents.

The valley is deeply cut into the mass of Kohala mountain, with three thousand-foot cliffs and some waterfalls up to fifteen-hundred feet. It is split by the sublime Waipi'o River. The valley was the permanent home for Hawaiian ali'i (royalty) until the time of King ʻUmi-a-Līloa.
