Life and Death in a Star-Forming Cloud
Nov 14, 2012 · W44 is the vast purple sphere that dominates the left-hand side of this image, and measures about 100 light-years across. W44 is located around 10,000 light-years away, within a forest of dense star-forming clouds in the constellation of Aquila, the Eagle. It is one of the best examples of a supernova remnant interacting with its parent cloud.
Gamma-Ray Emission from the Shell of Supernova Remnant W44 …
Jan 7, 2010 · Our results for W44 demonstrate the capability of the Fermi LAT for morphological and spectral studies of GeV emission from Galactic SNRs, which allow us to study the escape of energetic particles from SNR shells into interstellar space, the evolution of SNR shocks during the age of the SNR, and the impact of a dense environment.
ESA Science & Technology - The curious shape of a supernova remnant …
Nov 14, 2012 · Data from two ESA missions combine in a new view of the peculiar supernova remnant W44. The filamentary shell-like structure, detected by the Herschel Space Observatory at far-infrared wavelengths, is filled with hot gas that shines brightly in X-rays, as seen by the XMM-Newton X-ray Observatory.
Life and Death in a Star-Forming Cloud
Nov 14, 2012 · The aftershock of a stellar explosion rippling through space is captured in this new view of the supernova remnant called W44. The image combines longer-wavelength infrared and X-ray light captured by the European Space Agency's Herschel and …
Cosmic-ray acceleration and escape from supernova remnant W44 …
Jan 7, 2025 · The supernova remnant (SNR) W44 and its surroundings are a prime target for studying the acceleration of cosmic rays (CRs). Several previous studies established an extended gamma-ray emission that is set apart from the radio shell of W44.
dense molecular cloud complex. Aims. We present a detailed analysis of Fermi-LAT data with an emphasis on the spatial and spectral pr. perties of W44 and its surroundings. We also report the results of the observations performed with the MAGIC telescop.
The Supernova Remnant W44: confirmations and challenges for cosmic …
Mar 5, 2014 · Our paper is focused on a global re-assessment of all available data and models of particle acceleration in W44, with the goal of determining on a firm ground the hadronic and leptonic contributions to the overall spectrum. We also present new gamma-ray and CO NANTEN2 data on W44, and compare them with recently published AGILE and Fermi data.
