Driving across southern Colorado on US-50 takes you through almost every landscape landlocked North America has to offer. From the geological wonderland of the Colorado River plateau, which stretches west into Utah, the route climbs up and over the 14,000-ft (4,267-m) Rocky Mountains, which form a formidable wall down the center of the state.

Midway across Illinois, US-50 passes through the quirkily historic town of Salem (birthplace of two American icons: William Jennings Bryan and Miracle Whip), then crosses over the Wabash River into Indiana.

From Kansas City, and its noteworthy neighboring towns of Independence and Liberty, US-50 makes a lazy trek across Missouri’s rolling-prairie farmlands, stopping at the historic railroad town of Sedalia before reaching the state capital, Jefferson City, roughly midway across.

For most of the way across Utah, the high-speed I-70 freeway has replaced US-50, but if you have time to take a couple of detours, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most incredible scenery in the world.

Between Lake Tahoe in the west and Great Basin National Park on the Utah border, US-50 crosses more than 400 mi (645 km) of Nevada’s corrugated country, climbing up and over a dozen distinct mountain ranges while passing through four classic mining towns and the state capital, Carson City.

Between Vincennes and Bedford, US-50 winds its way through the hilly groves of the Hoosier National Forest. A worthwhile detour heads south through the hometowns of two of Indiana’s best-known sons.
