Sellar and parasellar masses are a common finding, and most of them are treated surgically via transsphenoidal approach. This type of surgery has revolutionized the approach to several hypothalamic-pituitary diseases and is usually effective, and well-tolerated by the patient.

This topic review covers the techniques, results, and complications of transsphenoidal surgery of pituitary adenomas and other sellar masses. The endocrine evaluation of these disorders, as well as options for medical therapy of prolactinomas and acromegaly, are reviewed elsewhere.
