Tehuantepec jackrabbits, also known as 'tropical hares', are found in tropical habitats. They are restricted to woody grasslands, savannas and dunes along the Gulf of Tehuantepec. The scrub of these habitats offers them extra cover and camouflage when resting and foraging. (Cervantes, et al., 2008; Escalante, et al., 2004)

The Tehuantepec jackrabbit (Lepus flavigularis) is easily distinguished from other species of jackrabbits by two black stripes that run from the base of the ears to the nape, and by its white flanks. Underparts are white, upperparts are bright-brown washed with black, rump is gray, and the tail is black.
Found only in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, where it has been reduced to just four small, isolated populations, the Tehuantepec Jackrabbit is considered the most endangered hare species in the world.
