Tehuan­te­pec jackrab­bits, also known as 'trop­i­cal hares', are found in trop­i­cal habi­tats. They are re­stricted to woody grass­lands, sa­van­nas and dunes along the Gulf of Tehuan­te­pec. The scrub of these habi­tats of­fers them extra cover and cam­ou­flage when rest­ing and for­ag­ing. (Cer­vantes, et al., 2008; Es­calante, et al., 2004)

The Tehuantepec jackrabbit (Lepus flavigularis) is easily distinguished from other species of jackrabbits by two black stripes that run from the base of the ears to the nape, and by its white flanks. Underparts are white, upperparts are bright-brown washed with black, rump is gray, and the tail is black.

Found only in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, where it has been reduced to just four small, isolated populations, the Tehuantepec Jackrabbit is considered the most endangered hare species in the world.
